This method of printing is also known as "Giclée" the name is derived from the French word meaning "to spray". Aside from being rather a silly word, it also has some rather unfortunate connotations in the French language so I, like many other Artists use the term "digital printmaking" to describe this emerging fine art print process.
The prints are made with the help of two Apple computers and an HP DesignJet 5000 large format printer. The ink system in the printer is pigment based. Pigmented ink has far superior longevity and resistance to ultra violet radiation than ordinary dye based inks, Hewlett Packard claim that prints made on the DesignJet 5000 can last up to 200 years before fading.
The paper I use is 100% cotton 225g Somerset Enhanced. This is a traditional printmaking paper manufactured in England. The paper is coated with a pigment that acts as a receptive layer for the ink.
This ink and paper combination produces an archival print of the highest quality.
I perform all my own printing. The editions are relatively small compared to the "mass production" potential of this process. I prefer to keep the editions small so the prints retain their uniqueness as a work of art.
Each edition consists of 60 prints; approximately 3 to 8 artists’ proofs may also be available of each image. When the print run is completed the original digital file for each image is destroyed.
